Can you believe how many different dog toys there are to choose from in the pet stores nowadays?

You know dog toys are a good idea: a bored dog will chew up your favorite shoes, or even worse, your couch. Dog toys help with the separation anxiety that may occur with you at work all day, will keep your dog exercised, both body and brain, and some toys even help protect or clean his teeth. Plus, the bonding you experience playing with your dog with his toys is not only important for you and the dog, it’s downright fun!

Here are a few tips when it comes to choosing and using dog toys.

DON’T GIVE YOUR DOG SHOES OR OLD CLOTHES AS TOYS:  You may feel you are giving him something that will comfort him in your absence, but the dog will learn that it’s OK to chew up your old shoes, and be unable to distinguish between your old and new items! It is harder to break a bad behavior than never to let it begin in the first place.

GET TOYS THAT ARE ROBUST:    Bones, hard rubber chew toys, strong rope for chewing, and soft rubber Frisbees are good toys made to last.  Watch out and get rid of any that may be falling into pieces small enough for the dog to swallow. Try a tennis ball, which bounces, has a texture they may like, and is great for throwing. Some dogs love a soft squishy toy as well, which they can carry around, or “mother.” Add a fun, responsive squeaky toy, and you have a good variety.

GET SIZE-APPROPRIATE TOYS: Your little Dachshund won’t be able to get his mouth around a large ball that is just right for a Mastiff! And don’t get something small for your larger dog; he may swallow a toy that is just right for a tiny dog. If you have dogs of different sizes, you will need to take some precautions.

DON’T LET YOUR DOG PLAY WITH STRING, RUBBER BANDS, OR RIBBONS: He may be fascinated by these, but they are not safe. They can be swallowed, and create some expensive and dangerous havoc in the digestive tract.

REMEMBER TO GET INVOLVED:  Pull on that rope and get your dog involved in a tug-of-war. Throw the tennis ball and encourage him to retrieve it (unless you want or need more exercise yourself… lol) Use the toys in your playtime together, and he will be more apt to play with them when you are away, as well.

MIX ‘EM UP:   Dogs get bored easily, and will really benefit from a variety of toys. It is a good idea to rotate the ones you give him, or leave with him.

Bottom line: switch them around, check the toys often for signs of deterioration, and get him something new and interesting at regular intervals.

Have fun!

I have been working with Suzy, an all American mixed breed dog,  for over 5 years, keeping her in shape for agility. She is now 13 and still going strong! She receives regular laser treatment and manual therapy, and is a favorite at the Wizard of Paws clinic!

Suzy’s owner, Linda Patenaude, sent us an email today, thrilled with Suzy’s performance in her last CPE Nationals. She did great – check out the email from Linda, below.

Way to go Suzy and Linda! I am very proud of this wonderful team!

Thanks to Donna Kelliher Photography for this great pic of Suzy!

And “yay!” Kaedence! We work with her as well here at the clinic, exercising her on the underwater treadmill regularly. Good to see the focus work is helping.

Kaedence – Thanks to Barry Rosen Photography

LINDA’S EMAIL:

“Well, Suzy’s last CPE Nationals has come and gone – she held up awesome, rocking her last class (Colors), going 8 of 9 in qualifying scores.

The heat and sun didn’t seem to bother her – of the 3 humans and 3 canines in the motel room, the only one of us bouncing out the door every day was Suzy! In her mind she was just getting ready to go play for another day!

She finished off in first place for the 20″ Specialist division for the Games and received a beautiful plaque. I’m very proud of my 13 year old. (Thanks so much to Debbie and the staff at Wizard of Paws for keeping her going)

“Kaedence had some nice moments and managed to grab that last elusive Level 3 Wildcard that we needed to finish off Level 3 – been chasing that one for over a year now – who would have figured we’d get it at Nationals. She had some scatterbrainy moments and some very nice moments going 3 for 9 getting the difficult part of the jackpot and then zipping off course. All in all her focus was good until she got tired. Not sure if her EPI affects her stamina (probably in some regards), but she didn’t even focus on the other dogs in the rings next to her and four of them were in a bunch :) which for her is a huge Q!!! (Thanks Lara for the focus work lessons)”

So glad it went so well, Linda, and thanks so much for writing with this great report!

We had such a lovely email from Linda McMahon, who is running for U.S. Senator, following her visit to Wizard of Paws this week. Linda is on a tour of CT small businesses, and we so enjoyed showing her around Wizard of Paws.

Here is what she wrote:

Dear Debbie,

Thank you so much  for letting me visit Wizard of Paws and ask questions about your business and operations.  I learn so much from these tours, and I know that the cost of health care is one of your concerns.

I especially enjoyed meeting Titan.  What a great success story!

Thank you for your support.  It would be a privilege for me to represent you as your Senator .

Good luck as you continue to expand.

Sincerely,

Linda McMahon

We have a winner!

We are so grateful for all your wonderful responses to our Feedback Survey. For the whole month of May, we received your comments in our Birthday Feedback Quiz, where we asked,  How has Wizard of Paws been involved in your dog’s life? We picked a winner at random from the many responses.

Our Congratulations to Connie Holt!

A $150.00 gift certificate for use in our online store is the prize she will receive. Hope you enjoy it, Connie!

And many thanks to all of you who took the time to write such wonderful comments!

Here is what Connie wrote:

“1st.) By getting to know Dr. Deb and her professional line of work.

2nd.) Watching top dogs perform at trials, agility, dog shows conformation showing that are under her care. AWESOME performances.

3rd.) Having the privilege to have my dogs( show dogs, breeding stock) to come under the care of the WizofPaws team. This is the best. It excites me to watch my kids enjoy what they do in training and treatments. It gives me a chance to learn and be taught about the process of the training and therapy. They are willing to give their time and teach during the therapy. Knowledge is the best defense to accomplishing results. WizofPaws gives results. I continue to bring my kids for their well being!”

And here are just a few of the wonderful things our clients wrote:

Tipper had pulled her illiosoas muscle and Wizard of Paws was recommended by Rick Krieger. She was favoring her outside rear leg and was not placing in the classes. After a few visits and an exercise regimen she competed at the cape shows and finished her championship

I am new to Wizard of Paws but have been working hard on my old dogs fitness routine. It has made me more aware of her need for regular exercise even though she is 11 years old. Also even the slightest movements can help keep them in shape.

My dog Ramona had FCE. It was devastating for me because she is my hiking partner. I even went and bought a baby stroller so she could still come walking with me. Thanks to Wizard of Paws the baby stroller is collecting dust. Ramona is totally mobile …she is 10 this year and is able to go out and put me to shame with her energy and endurance. Wizard of Laws got her back and her biweekly visits help to keep.her. going. THANK YOU GUYS!!!!!!

Wizard of Paws has been involved in ALL of our dog’s lives! From Vee to Boomer to Kazee to Catcher, whenever they need support, Dr. Deb is there to give it. We’ve learned prevention techniques, maintenance practices, and had expert care when needed. If ever a wizard of wiz there was, that’s Dr. Deb and the staff of Wizard of Paws!

Wizard of Paws evaluated my 2010 litter of puppies, helping to determine which ones would be best suited to go to the homes looking for performance dogs.

Whenever we are at a trial , my dogs get laser massaged to help them run their best. Also they spent a few days last year getting conditioned after a few weeks off!

We’ve been conditioning and getting lasered…lots of good information about supplements, exercise, strengthening of our little Norwich terrier. And who would have thought she’d do so well in the water treadmill… She has no major issues but needs the muscle building to run agility at her best.

10 months ago we walked in to Wizard of Paws to pick up a help em up harness for our then 13 year old German Shepherd Skyler who was using Eddie’s wheels and had recently lost use of her hind end. In talking to Deb the Wiz we found that laser treatments and underwater treadmill work could be beneficial and after talking to Deb we decided on a once a wk session to build her strength. After our evaluation Skyler got her assigned PT Becki who has been amazing along with Deb and everyone involved at Wiz of Paws. Skyler loves Becki and loves her sessions (as long as no one alters them as she is a creature of habit) Skyler can now walk short distances on her own and her mental attitude is amazing. As we come up on almost a year of once a wk treatments for us it is worth every penny as our Skyler who is now 14 1/2 years old is doing fantastic and I smile every time I look down at my side and see our girl still here. I wish everyone could understand just how important and valuable these type of treatments can be not just for performance dogs but for old dogs needing a little help :) ) Thank you to everyone at Wizard of Paws!

my newly adopted 6 yr. old Fox terrier tore her ACL 4 months, after I got her. Deb and staff helped me through the scary aftermath with all of the in house therapy and out of house support! You were all very patient with me as a very nervous “mom” who had a million questions about Bonnie’s recuperation. I could not have gotten through it without the therapy and fantastic feedback and moral support.

In October 2011 my 9 year old Female Boxer Harlie was diagnosed with a genetic degenerative spinal cord disease. So a local Vet Clinic that has a under water treadmill started her on physical therapy. While in therapy, they had mentioned that a harness may be helpful in walking/carrying her. I got online and started to search and that is when I found Wizard of paws. I ordered the Help ‘em Up Harness on a Friday morning and it was delivered to my house the next day! I was able to get Harlie into this harness immediately and get her use to it. Harlie is still full of energy and we walk her with this harness every day. Although walking is difficult for her, having her in this harness helps me help her. Thank you again for being so quick in filling my order!!

They have helped my dog Tucker recover from his cruciate surgery and bounce back better and stronger and they keep my dog Ace in tip top condition between the water treadmill and egg work.

Proper diagnosis of injury, effective recovery from injury, conditioning exercises, physical evaluation and preventative steps that make me feel that I’m doing what I can to ensure our dogs are healthy. I enjoy working with Emma & Blossom more knowing that they are getting expert care from Wizard of Paws.

Trained me to keep my dogs healthy for life. It all started when I started agility. Then Missy injured her back and someone gave me a copy of stretching your dog. Then I learned how to use a ball and a treadmill. both girls are helathy and haven’t had injuries since.
